Community resilience and Climate justice

LEAVEN’S DREAM FOR CLIMATE JUSTICE AND COMMUNITY RESILIENCE

Through an listening season in the Fall of 2023, Leaven Community unveiled a dream to become a Community Resilience Hub. We imagine Leaven being a place where diverse neighbors can grow and share food, care for one another and have access to the knowledge- and resource-sharing we all need to thrive amidst uncertainty.

Resilience hubs are trusted community-centered places that are set up to address daily community needs, and are also equipped to provide support in the face of disasters like fires, earthquakes, and other extreme weather events. Learn more about Resilience Hubs here

We can’t act on this dream without our neighbors! That’s why part of this event will be to invite the surrounding communities - YOU! - to a community forum asking what “disaster” looks like in our lives - climate-related or otherwise - and how Leaven Community might be able to respond to such disasters.

Tell us WHat you think

We want to hear from our neighbors in Northeast Portland about how they define community resilience - and how they imagine Leaven contributing to community resilience in our neighborhood.

Climate justice core team

Leaven’s Climate Justice Core Team exists to organize for climate justice and climate resilience in our immediate neighborhood.

Participating in a statewide Climate Resilience Cohort, our work will be on multiple planes:

  • Local - stewarding our community’s land and resources towards community-wide resilience, working at the level of our local watersheds

  • Systems change - advocating for policies in our governments and institutions that advance climate justice

  • Culture shift - nurturing ways of being that support collective resilience and well-being, for people and our planet

We hope to unveil and support Leaven taking our “next best step” toward climate justice in our neighborhood and region, for the benefit of future generations and our precious shared planet.
