Stir the Pot: Samhain/Dia de los Muertos

  • Leaven Community 5431 NE 20th Ave Portland, OR 97211 (map)

Stir the Pot is an invitation to tend a community cauldron in the spirit of holding space for the ancestral and learned wisdom and/or knowledge we have gained through our embodiment on Earth. Dates align with astronomical seasonal pivots as expressed by European/Celtic ancient Earth-based planetary holy days recovered from and connected to pre-Christian land rhythms.  We'll have a group weather report that includes an astrological, lunar, and seasonal outlook; write down questions, blessings and/or wishes and put them in the pot. Stir the Pot offers our community a home for all we experience that we cannot name in our human relationship to the earth herself: a bridge to the everyday mysteries of being alive.

Samhain offers us an opportunity to remember who came before us, to celebrate and honor our beloved dead, and acknowledge that we are part of a lineage that weaves into a past that still supports us. Human story reaching back thousands of years tells us that this is when the veil between our living world and the world of the dead is thinnest, and we are reminded to both feast with and for them, and also guard against falling into destructive patterns of those who did not learn to weave with love while they were alive. Let us hear the call to be the cursebreakers and healers. Our challenge in this time of year is to cherish life while it is here, accept the death of all living beings, and hold each other in love and memory, creating gratitude for those who are not here in corporeal form, and enjoy the sweetness of life while we co-exist in this plane. Our era carries the burden and pain of mass extinction and biodiversity loss; the pot welcomes our grief and honor. It's also a time when some cultures have culled their herds—butchering to feed ourselves through the winter—or have released portions of flocks. What do we need to let sleep so we will have enough energy to get us through the time of reduced sunlight, when the trees sleep and the earth rests? How do we, in our culture of rampant activity geared toward endless growth, slow down? What can we 'butcher' to nourish us as we go into an insane election cycle? Stir the Pot offers a place for these and any questions. Everyone has wisdom to share.
